Diesel Particulate Filters

Diesel Particulate Filters, or “DPFs” have been in use here since 2007 when introduced by the EPA to help diesel-engine equipped vehicles comply with stringent emission regulations. DPFs greatly reduce the soot and ash that was previously prevalent in diesel exhaust, and when used with EGR they can eliminate the familiar diesel smell. Combined with urea injection, the exhaust is so clean that contaminants can’t be measured.

However, they require maintenance, and a lack of this maintenance can result in stranded drivers, missed deliveries and unscheduled downtime. Because they are a complex unit, they are expensive to replace, so it’s best to rely on a regular maintenance schedule OR the vehicle’s sensors to let the operator know when to do an active or passive regeneration (soot cleansing). If a driver ignores the engine sensors call for an active regen, the truck engine controls will cut engine power, and eventually shut it down.

Weighing nearly 100 pounds, the DPF can be serviced if the correct equipment is used. If the unit is inspected and damage is found, it must be replaced with a new or remanufactured unit. Damage can occur from road shock, excessive heat, or by dropping the unit once removed. A damaged unit has no value, and must be replaced. Since new units can cost several thousands of dollars, it’s imperative to keep your DPF clean and in good service for as long as possible.

We at Diesel Worx are familiar and skilled at working with your DPF. We take pride in the work we do here in Broken Arrow to keep your diesel on the road and producing income for you. If you suspect your DPF needs service, or would like us to inspect it for you, give us a call at (918) 237-7568 and we’ll set up an appointment.
